PET Bottles for Edible Oil & Cooking Oil Packaging: A Buyer's Guide

If you package cooking oil, the bottle is doing more work than it looks like. Oil is denser and more viscous than water, it can react with certain plastics over time, and a bottle that looks fine on the shelf can still leak from a poorly matched cap. Here's what actually matters when you're sourcing PET bottles for edible oil.

Why PET over HDPE or tin for oil

• •Clarity — PET is crystal clear, so the oil's colour is visible on the shelf; HDPE is opaque and hides quality cues buyers look for.
• •Barrier properties — PET has good oxygen and moisture barrier for retail shelf life without needing multilayer construction for most edible oils.
• •Cost at scale — PET blow-moulding is cheaper per unit than tin at the volumes most edible oil brands and repackers order.
• •Weight — lighter than glass or tin, which matters for freight cost on bulk orders moving out of Tamil Nadu.

Neck finish and cap sealing

Oil bottles need a tighter seal than water bottles because oil is more prone to seepage around a loose cap thread, especially during transit when bottles are stacked and jostled. We manufacture with 28mm PCO and flip-top neck finishes matched to induction-seal-compatible caps — the induction seal (the foil liner under the cap) is what actually stops leakage in transit, not the cap alone. If your current supplier isn't offering a neck finish compatible with induction sealing, that's usually the root cause of in-transit leak complaints.

Sizes and wall thickness

Edible oil is commonly packaged in 200ml, 500ml and 1 litre PET bottles for retail, with 5 litre and larger jars/cans for bulk and HoReCa. Because oil is heavier than water at the same volume, we increase wall thickness (gram weight) on oil-specific bottles versus water bottles of the same size — a bottle designed for water will often flex or bulge under oil's extra weight over a few weeks of storage.

What to ask any PET bottle supplier for oil

• •Confirm the neck finish is induction-seal compatible, not just "capped."
• •Ask for the bottle's gram weight, not just the volume — this tells you if it's built for oil's density or repurposed from a water mould.
• •Request a sample batch and leave filled bottles on their side for a week before committing to a bulk order — this surfaces slow leaks a quick inspection won't.
