PET vs HDPE for Edible Oil Packaging: Which Should You Choose?

If you're packaging edible or cooking oil, PET and HDPE are the two materials you'll actually be choosing between. Both are used widely in India; the right one depends on what you're packaging and how you want it to look on shelf.

Clarity and shelf appeal

PET is transparent by nature — buyers can see the oil's colour and clarity through the bottle, which matters for premium or branded oil where visual quality is part of the sell. HDPE is naturally opaque/translucent (usually white or a solid colour), which is common for budget or bulk-format oil packaging where shelf transparency isn't the priority.

Barrier properties

HDPE has a somewhat better moisture barrier in some formats, which is one reason it's common for larger bulk containers. PET offers a strong oxygen and aroma barrier and holds its shape and gloss better over the shelf life of a smaller retail-format bottle, which is why you see PET dominate the 200ML–1L edible oil retail segment.

Cost and tooling

At comparable wall thickness, PET and HDPE costs are usually close; the bigger cost driver is bottle weight and neck finish, not the resin choice itself. If you're switching from HDPE to PET (or vice versa), the main practical question is whether your existing caps and filling line are compatible with the new neck finish — check this before committing to a resin switch.
